To Windsor City Council:
Your report on truck traffic on Wyandotte St. concluded that if large trucks, including transports, were prevented from using this artery, they would travel down Ottawa St., Riverside Drive, Giles Blvd., and other narrow east west arteries. Construction at Wyandotte and Walker has prevented transports, etc from turning onto Wyandotte from Walker for months. Trucks are not using Giles, Ottawa, etc, as truck traffic is not allowed on these streets. They are using E.C. Row and other more appropriate east-west routes to get to the Detroit/Windsor tunnel, bridge, etc.
The undersigned urge Windsor City Council to do the right thing and ban these dangerous, noisy, polluting, and heavy rigs from this narrow business/residential and historically significant street ASAP. This ban would not include delivery trucks or emergency vehicles.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

... so that it's safer to cross. I find I have to inch forward until I'm almost halfway through an intersection, just so I can see if there's any oncoming traffic. The view is blocked by cars parked along the street. If the parking signs are moved further away from the corners, cars will be visible sooner, making it safer to cross.
However, this means fewer on-street parking spots.
The last review was, I believe, approximately 7 years ago. The appropriate time for such a review is before the next municipal election. Voters deserve to know what their candidates think on this issue. Continue the status quo (base salary plus payments for boards/committees) or examine other forms of payment for our elected officials.

Set guidelines for areas where panhandling should not occur as well not allowing it between the hours of 11pm and 6am
Currently Provincial laws regulate "HOW" a panhandler can behave. Aggressive Panhandling is dealt with solely by the actions of the panhandler
What the Provincial laws don't cover are "WHERE" and "WHEN" a panhandler can operate. These two items contribute to aggressiveness but are not acknowledged.
Examples
1. Panhandle over a cafe railing and even if the panhandler is "nice as pie" it can still be seen as aggressive if the person is in the middle of meal and can't simply walk away.
2. Panhandle right outside a bank machine and a person can be intimidated
3. Panhandle right at the bus stop can intimidate a newcomer to our town that will be already uneasy in a new city
4. Panhandle at 3 in the morning and the person walking down the street could be intimidated
Studies in other canadian cities show that 7to 8 out of 10 panhandlers will use the money for Drugs, alcohol and Cigarettes as well as use the moneys to avoid following rules set out by institutions meant to help them the Salvation Army or the Mission (No fighting, Drinking etc..). Not to mention panhandlers do impact tourists and visitors perception of Downtown and the other BIA's
Anyone who sympathizes with panhandlers should be giving the money to the Salvation Army, The mission, Unit 7 or other organizations that can far more effectively help the less fortunate amongst us.
REMEMBER When it comes to Panhandlers: If you give them Change, They'll stay the same

Tie parking tickets to the license plate. Revenue neutral so as to not cost the city any money
1st ticket free
2nd ticket $10
3rd ticket $20
4th ticket $30
5th ticket and beyond $50
Rationale is that the tourist gets 1 free pass to ensure they have a positive experience. The person who is simply an occasional visitor does not get discouraged from coming to BIA's
The person who simply pay's the fines as the price for parking and racks up $2-$400 in parking tickets per year will see that double forcing them to change their behaviour
Not advocating for contracting out, but if the city decided thats the way they will go, then make the new computer system part of the tender

I know this flies contrary to the interests of a local entrepreneur, but people who were willing to wake up at home with their car will still use that certain business ;-)

Why not simply protect landlords rent by paying them directly for low income tenants.
It makes no sense to me to build a new low income housing unit in a city that has the highest apartment vacancy rate in Canada while empty apts and houses literally rot away

Many times we think a retirement community strategy is founded only cheap housing and health care when that sends a horrible message that retiring in Windsor is simply a cost effective way to "get sick and die" instead of the place spending you're years to "Be well and LIVE" . For that we need walkable communities programmed with activities, arts and more to show that Windsor is an amazing place

most effective and safe physical activity programs for older adults are those that:
1) Set a specific goal for increasing older adult participation in physical activity.
2) Encourage physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.
3) Promote everyday tasks as opportunities for physically activity.
4) Offer a variety of group-based physical activity programs and self-directed opportunities that are suitable for older adults.
5) Offer physical activity programs that feature one or more components of physical
activity (cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, balance).
6) Conduct a census of active aging programs in the community/city.
7) Ensure that programs are safe and effective, and are tailored to meet the needs of individual participants.
8) Offer instruction in proper technique and provide adequate supervision.
9) Include behavioral support strategies to increase motivation and promote retention.
10) Address risk management and injury prevention

I'd like to see a streetclosure party each week in Downtown but in a different area
Let the public know there will always be a street party but allow a different area of downtown to be highlighted each week
We always talk about downtown street closures in the terms of the entire downtown.
Problem is with street closures will not succeed without programming.
The area is simply too large to program
Secondly, when we do close down the entire area, there are winners and losers, it would be nice to give every area of downtown a chance to be a winner. We could even have every area compete to see whose businesses contribute to the most entertaining and best decorated closure
Chatham street east one week
Chatham street west one week
North Ouellette one week
South Ouellette one week
Pelissier one week
Whatever area I forgot another week
12 closures, every area gets 2 per summer
I learned in politics that if you want to get people excited, always book a room smaller than what you need. We can enlarge the boundaries (I recommend closing 2 areas) as soon as the demand requires

Idea: modeled on the "Burger Poll" of many political races, this will utilize participating locations in all wards in the City.
Participating restaurants/pubs will be given ballots after the nominations close on September 10th. Customers visiting each location and purchasing a meal or beverage as selected by the participating location will be given a ballot. Each ballot will contain an opportunity to vote for one person for Mayor and one person for Councillor in the ward where the participating outlet is located. The bottom portion of the ballot will be a detachable piece that will list the dates and times of the advance polls and election day along with where to get more information on the voting process
Eg. Phog Lounge could have a "Poutine Poll". Anyone purchasing a poutine would be given a ballot. A running tally will be kept and weekly totals posted on Citizfaction on the Mayor's race and each ward.
For some locations the qualifier could be purchasing an appetizer or maybe a local beverage such as Walkerville ale.
Ultimately I'd like to get at least one location in all 10 wards.
If you know of any locations who may be interested, please list them in the comments

More residents will benefit from Riverside Drive if a wide shared-use trail is built to replace the current narrow sidewalk which is in poor condition in some places, and is technically illegal for cyclists, even though many choose to to do so, rather than risking their lives on the road. Many more people don't cycle in this area at all due to perceived dangers. Bike lanes are currently in the VISTA plan that has been held up by legal wrangling between some Riverside residents and the city. While bike lanes benefit commuter cyclists, they are not a viable solution for families, and will not add to the scenic nature of Riverside Drive. A beautiful trail along one side of the road could be safely enjoyed by walkers, joggers and cyclists, especially older people and children. It would also hopefully appease at least some of the residents opposed to the current plans.

Solicit Mr. Maggio or even R & M auctions to display their cars in the Armories as an interim use and Museum. Both have such amazing collections that they would make for one of the best Tourist Attractions between here and Toronto. http://www.citywindsor.ca/001985.asp recommendations start on page 37
We focus on City Center West when the Glengarry Marentette area may be the bigger opportunity
The area is surrounded
to the west by Downtown/Casino/Arena/Convention Center/City Hall
To the East by a new train station
To the south by Walkerville Bia and Wyandotte Center Bia
To the North by the riverfront, specifically the new festival plaza
This area should and could be the focus of residential intensification efforts. revitalizing this area would also help all small businesses contained in the BIA's adjacent to it.
